The Bridges Program is based out of a commercially zoned character home. This wheelchair accessible program is conveniently located just a few blocks from the City of Courtenay’s downtown core. The Bridges Day Program serves up to twenty (20) adults who have expressed a desire to gain paid employment and independence in the community. Day Program hours are from 9am-3pm-Monday to Friday.
In 1988, the original participants of the Bridges Program formed a working collective and named it , “Bridges Contracting Services”.
The Co-op was based on consensus and working agreements. This concept has evolved over time with new members. The members share their gross expenses and pay themselves a worker share based on the actual hours they have worked.
A percentage of gross earnings is reinvested back into the Co-op and this allows them to purchase tools and items needed to continue to operate, as well as towards chosen recreational activities. The business has proven to be a successful contributor to the economy of the Comox Valley and the Co-op is a large part of park maintenance through the Regional District of Strathcona.
The Co-op has its own bookkeeping system, bank account and signing officers. The position of bookkeeper is a paid job for a Bridges member.
As the participants gain skills and become more independent, they may decide to apply for an individual work placement. Future Focus will then support this by connecting the participant with an employer who is looking to employ.
The Bridges Day Program promotes active healthy lifestyles and we provide opportunities for life-long learning, volunteering, art, music, cooking, exercise, friendship, leadership, advocacy and community inclusion through recreation and paid work.
